What Is Crimson Moon?
Updated September 4, 2026
Crimson Moon is a gothic action-adventure RPG developed and published by ProbablyMonsters, released September 1, 2026 at $19.99. You play a Nephilim — a human-angel hybrid — reclaiming the fallen city of Gildenarch from the Infernal Legion through replayable, run-based missions with souls-inspired melee combat, alone or in two-player online co-op.
The Premise
Gildenarch has fallen to demons, undead, vampires and Hellgrowth abominations. You serve the Church as a Nephilim, the one kind of soldier equipped to push back into the city, and your long-term objective is to recover the three Abraxas stones needed to close the portal feeding the invasion.
The tone is gothic high-renaissance rather than generic dark fantasy: cathedral architecture, holy iconography turned violent, and a religious order that made you into a weapon.
Who Made It
ProbablyMonsters both developed and published Crimson Moon. It is an AA release rather than a blockbuster, and the $19.99 price is central to how it was received — critics landed around a 72 Metascore, with the more positive reviews explicitly weighing the game against what that price usually buys.
How a Run Works
You launch missions from Sanctus Clypeus, the hub, at the War Table. A run takes you through handcrafted Wards with changing encounters, ending in a demanding boss fight. Along the way you pick up gear, boons and two currencies.
Gear you carry back and purify enters a permanent catalog that seeds future loadouts. Boons collected during a run are temporary and reset. That split — permanent catalog, temporary run power — is the engine the whole game runs on.
What the Combat Feels Like
Melee is souls-inspired: deliberate wind-ups, dodges and parries, weapon swapping to break guard, and a stamina economy that punishes button-mashing. Weapon Arts and elemental effects layer on top, and angelic transformation gives you a burst window with brief invincibility for boss phases.
Steam's own tags capture the hybrid honestly — Souls-like and Roguelike sit next to Action RPG and Online Co-Op. It is not a full Souls campaign and not a strict roguelike; it borrows the combat weight of one and the run structure of the other.
Solo or Co-op
Both are first-class. Single-player is fully supported, and optional online co-op is capped at two players with crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, enabled by default. Co-op partners share a life pool and can revive each other mid-fight. There is no cross-progression, so your save stays on the platform you bought it on.
